Chiropractic Care In the Olympics

The Olympics-it’s a time of great excitement and expectation among all of the athletes and citizens of the representative countries.  Here in the United States, all eyes are glued to the events unfolding in Beijing each day this summer.

One unlikely star of this year’s Olympics is chiropractic care.  The U.S track and field team includes the oldest member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team-Jeff Hartwig.  What is his secret to longevity and vitality-chiropractic care!

“The first time I was treated by a chiropractor was akin to a miracle — a much better option than simply using conventional medicine because my injuries healed faster and my whole body felt better,” said Hartwig during an interview conducted a week prior to the Olympic events.

Jeff is treated in Beijing by the U.S. Olympic Committee Team chiropractor Ted Forcum D.C. who travels with the team.  Since the 1980 Winter Games, there has been a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) attached to all U.S. Olympic teams.

The best thing about chiropractic care for Jeff is that it aids in speedier recovery and better healing than conventional medical methods.

You may not be trying out for the U.S. Olympic team, but you like Jeff may have some aches and pains.  In the Kansas City area, call Dr. Michael Tomlinson at (816) 584-0444 to schedule a free initial consultation and appointment!

Auto Accident Do’s and Don’ts

So you’ve had an auto accident – what should you do to ensure that your life will be disrupted as little as possible?

On the scene of the auto accident (Do’s and Don’ts):

Do Exchange insurance information among drivers.>

Do NOT attempt to confront a belligerent driver. If the other driver appears belligerent or unwilling to exchange information, stay in your car and write down the license plate number of the driver. Do ensure the safety of all passengers if you are able.Do NOT move any passengers who are injured. Wait until qualified medical personnel arrive to attend to any injured passengers.

Do follow local laws regarding auto accident reporting. Understand the rules for your community for reporting an auto accident.Do NOT fail to report an auto accident to the police that should be reported. Doing so could expose you to legal charges in the future.

Do comply with all instructions from law enforcement at the scene of the auto accident. They are there to help. Do NOT attempt to drive off until instructed to do so if law enforcement is on the scene of the auto accident.

Do get a thorough medical examination after the auto accident. Even if you “feel” fine. These are just a few tips to help you minimize the effect of an auto accident on your life. In the Kansas City area, call Dr. Michael Tomlinson at (816)584-0444 to schedule an initial consultation if you have experienced an automobile accident.

Even Sham Acupuncture is More Effective Than Other Back Pain Treatments

This article by Yahoo! tells about a study recently concluded in Germany.  The results of the study are interesting-it appears that even “sham” acupuncture (false treatments) gave better results for treatment of back pain than more conventional methods of care.

In a quotation from the article:

“The superiority of both forms of acupuncture suggests a common underlying mechanism that may act on pain generation, transmission of pain signals or processing of pain signals by the central nervous system and that is stronger than the action mechanism of conventional therapy,” wrote Dr. Michael Haake, of the University of Regensburg in Bad Abbach, and his colleagues.

The potential health benefits of acupuncture have been known for quite some time-this study simply highlights yet again the impact that acpuncture can have on treating pain of all types.  In the Kansas City, area, call Dr. Michael Tomlinson at (816)584-0444 to schedule an initial visit to explore how acupuncture might treat your painful condition.

Spinal Decompression

You may have heard the term “spinal decompression”, but if you are like most, you probably have no idea what it means. Here are a few questions and answers which give the highlights on this groundbreaking procedure.

1. What Exactly is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression melds technology with the proven techniques of chiropractic medicine. Spinal Decompression therapy consists of using FDA cleared technology to apply computer controlled methods of relieving slipped or bulging discs, sciatica and/or low back pain non-surgically.

2. How Does Spinal Decompression work?

The equipment used in spinal decompression therapy may appear somewhat similar to a traditional chiropractic adjustment table, but that’s where the similarities end. By using precision computerized equipment, a doctor of chiropractic is able to administer targeted therapy to the exact areas which need treatment. This can be more precise than some traditional chiropractic methods.

3. Who is a candidate for spinal decompression therapy?

Generally, most patients with slipped and/or bulging(herniated) discs as well as those who have chronic neck and/or back pain are good candidates for spinal decompression therapy.

In the Kansas City Area, call Dr. Tomlinson at (816)584-0444 to get an initial consultation and discuss how spinal decompression therapy might work for you!

Auto Accident

BAM!! You’ve been hit from behind by a driver who was a little too involved in his cell phone conversation.Though you may find that there is little damage to your car, it’s highly unlikely that you have come away with no physical injuries. Whiplash, an injury to the soft tissue of the neck is sometimes very deceptive in terms of symptoms. You may not feel injured immediately after the accident, but the symptoms may appear within a day or two.

After an auto accident of any type, it’s a good idea to have an examination by a doctor. Doctors of chiropractic are highly skilled and trained to look for issues which may not appear as symptoms initially. By visiting a chiropractor as quickly as possible after the accident , you are giving yourself the best possible chance for a successful recovery if you are indeed injured.

You may wonder which symptoms you should look for which might indicate whiplash. Here are a few symptoms that indicate you may want to visit a doctor:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Neck Pain
  • Back pain
  • Nausea

First Visit to a Chiropractor

If you are like a lot of Americans, you may be suffering from some chronic pain in your back, neck or joints. While your general physician may have told you that you will have to “learn to live with the pain”, visiting a chiropractor might offer you different options for freedom from pain.

You may wonder what it will be like to visit a chiropractor for the very first time. Well, for your first visit, there are three things that you will experience:

  1. A thorough examination – Your Doctor will examine you thoroughly, though this examination may be a little different than some others that you might be used to in a doctor’s office. You may be asked to bend or twist. This is to determine the current condition of your back and/or spine. You may also receive some strength and reflex tests to determine your overall state of health.
  1. X-Ray(Diagnostic Imaging) – To properly assess the condition of your spine, your doctor may take detailed X-Rays of your back and/or your joints. This is to further assess your overall health and assist in determining a comprehensive program of care for your condition.
  1. A one-on-one consultation – Once your doctor has a clear picture of your overall initial health, it’s time for the two of you to sit down and discuss various methods of treatment that will assist you. Possibly at this time, your doctor may propose a course of treatment. Whatever treatment options you choose, you can rest assured that you and your doctor will work together to get you healthy and pain free as quickly as possible!

While there is sometimes apprehension about visiting a chiropractor, you will find it to be a significant move toward becoming pain free. If you are in the Kansas City Area, call (816)584-0444 to set up a consultation today!
